seul — only, unique | terre — earth, ground

dena rochelle, landscape designer + founder

My interest in horticulture intensified while digging into dense clay soil at my Northern California home. I realized my life-long love of design translated outdoors.

I strive to be a bit different. My aesthetic is curated modern, with an eye toward uncommon subtlety. I prefer a plant palette that doesn’t look quite like everyone else. It’s similar to how I make wardrobe selections. I mix simple, quality classics with an interesting element and I love to layer. I’m drawn to the exceptional, which often requires research and finding particular pieces. I’m the one special ordering something that hasn’t quite hit mainstream.

I look at each landscape design project as a reflection of the site, place and its inhabitants, thru my eyes. I love curating plans that blend contemporary aesthetics and naturalistic qualities. I’m intentional about making realistic choices with regionally appropriate selections to suit each space. Think of it as an artful stylization of plants, which inevitably and wonderfully evolves over time.

All of the botanical images on this site are my own. I hope they inspire you to seek a landscape design that is remarkable and suited to our changing environments.

a bit of history:

My editorial endeavors began in the fashion, design and architecture division of ABRAMS BOOKS in NYC. Magazines lured me away, and then tech, upon resettling in California.

NorCal, SoCal and back again…

A decade spent leading social media campaigns for lifestyle, fashion + beauty brands. Creative lead at FIG+YARROW. Other clients: CREDO | DRYBAR |SPLENDID. Prior to launching my agency, my written work appeared in REFINERY29, DAILY CANDY, and C MAGAZINE, + other style-focused outlets.

Should’ve known when I was writing garden articles for CALIFORNIA HOME & DESIGN that I’d eventually end up being a landscape designer when I grew up.
