This project brought the indoors out — extending the home’s living space beneath a new Hanso pergola. The existing curvilinear retaining walls had held the hillside for decades, but the new program asked for cleaner geometry; a rectilinear wall was designed to frame the space behind the garage and give the new room its edges. Within the pergola, black timber slats frame a large television above a tiled shelf — a key design feature, and an uncommon material choice for an outdoor room. Tile, furnishings, and finishes were all studio selections, with the tile installed by a dedicated tile contractor. On the lower terraced hillside, existing plantings were cleared — health, placement, and invasives all working against keeping them. The replanting, tucked beneath towering redwoods just past the pergola, was composed in mass plantings along softly curved lines, easing the transition from new architecture back into the hillside.

Completed: Fall/Winter 2025.
