Existing highlights: California Pepper Trees + Incense Cedar provide soft screening between the neighboring arboretum. Borrowed views of Palm, Eucalyptus and many other trees that are part of the 45 varieties included in the public space.

A reimagining of a disconnected back yard. The site comes with a rare advantage: a neighboring arboretum contributing borrowed views of palm, eucalyptus, and dozens of other species from its 45-variety collection.

The design leans into that gift. Existing California pepper trees and incense cedar already soften the boundary; new planting extends that logic — composed to feel as if it’s always been part of the larger landscape. The eye doesn’t stop at the fence line.

The brief covers screening between the new fire pit and the open space beyond, native groundcovers for hillside erosion, no-mow grass alternatives, and foliage chosen for texture, movement, sheen, and dense purple bloom from March through October.
