A recently renovated home framed by an impressive mix of existing perimeter trees and shrubs — oaks, cedars, olives, and pears, all kept. The rest of the large space is ready for reimagining.
The homeowners’ intention is unusual and welcome — to use as much of the front yard as possible for an edible garden. Most edible plantings get tucked into the back; bringing them forward asks for a design that holds up visually from the street while still doing the work of a productive garden. Form and function in equal measure.
The main challenge (besides gophers) is composing that balance. With the homeowner as resident gardener and hands-on collaborator, the design can evolve over time.
